Massage Therapy Massage Therapy involves any hands-on activity for the purpose of bringing about changes in health. Therapeutic massage addresses issues that are of concern to the patient where as massage for relaxation focuses on reduction of stress (physical, mental, emotional). Most massage is done directly on the skin, although it can also be done through clothing. A massage oil is usually applied to help keep the skin soft and allow the therapist’s hands to move smoothly. A massage lotion is also available for the same purpose.
Some of the benefits of receiving a massage include improved muscle flexibility, relaxation, elimination of toxins, reduced muscle soreness, and improved mental and emotional well-being.
Deep Tissue Massage is a form of massage that focuses on the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissues. It is helpful in areas that are chronically tense, such as the lower back, neck, and shoulders. Similar strokes are used as in Swedish massage but the movement is deeper and slower and focused more on the areas of pain and tension.
Sports Massage is a form of massage that helps athletes alleviate tension and stress from their body which can result from physical activities. It uses a combination of Swedish massage, trigger points and other techniques to reduce muscle tension and promote flexibility.
Lymphatic Massage works with the lymphatic system, which is a large part of the immune system. A healthy lymphatic system can help strengthen and assist the body in handling disease and allergies, as well as the common cold. Using short brisk strokes, this massage causes the fluid in the lymphatic system to move which stimulates the process of cleaning the body.
